Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains

October 2006 Meeting Details

CAPT Annual Meeting
Cary, N.C.
October 21, 2006

The annual meeting this year will be in Cary. We will meet on third floor of the Page Walker Hotel, which is located at 119 Ambassador Loop, just one block east of the Cary Amtrak Station. The meeting will be from 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. The Page Walker Hotel was built in 1868 as a railroad hotel across the tracks from both the Southern and Seaboard stations. From 1916 to 1980 it was used as a private residence. In 1985 the Cary Town Council purchased the building. A campaign to fund the restoration resulted in the building being opened in December 1991 as the Page Walker Arts and History Center.

There are five restaurants open, within three blocks of the station, upon the Carolinian's arrival into Cary . To the west on North Harrison Avenue is the Bosphorus Turkish Restaurant and the Sweet Traditions Bakery. To the south on South Academy Street are the Serendipity Deli, and the Once in a Blue Moon Bakery and Cafe. One block south and two blocks to the East is the Food Factory, a hot dog and sandwich cafe. There should be plenty of time for lunch before our meeting gets underway.

If arriving on the Carolinian, it is scheduled to arrive northbound at 10:43 a.m. The southbound departure from Cary is later in the afternoon at 5:03 p.m. If you wish to ride the Silver Star, it now stops at Cary. It arrives northbound at 5:11 a.m. and departs southbound at 9:27 p.m. If you are coming up on the Silver Star, CAPT Treasurer Gene Kirkland will meet you, if we know of your arrival.

Directors and Officers for the Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains will be elected at the October 21, 2006, general membership meeting. Directors serve two year terms, and officers are elected yearly. The board of directors consists of 12 to 18 members based on the percentage of CAPT members in North Carolina and South Carolina. This serves as official notice of the annual meeting and elections. Anyone interested in running for the board should contact any member of the present board and provide biographical information for consideration, or be prepared to provide this information in person at the meeting. The current CAPT Board serves as the official Nominating Committee.

The following three directors are completing the second year of their 2 year terms: Don Stewart, Bob Bischoff, Ed Locklin.

Martin Wheeler, Gene Kirkland, Bill Cole, Art Peterson, Dale Reynolds, Jack Stein, Ralph Ward, and Dewey Brower were elected for new 2 year terms on 10-8-2005.

Dan Smith was appointed to finish the two year term of Fred Hallock on 10-8-2005. That term ends at this annual meeting.

Other business at the Annual meeting will include:
  1. Secretary's Report
  2. Treasurer's Report
  3. Reports of the President, Vice-Presidents, other Officers and Board Members
  4. Update on new printing of CAPT Full color Map and Brochure
  5. Updates on rail passenger developments in the Carolinas
  6. Update on Amtrak
  7. Selection of meeting site for the December board meeting
Hope you can join us!
