Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains

December 2011 Meeting Details

CAPT Board Meeting
Charleston, S.C.
December 10, 2011

The Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains will meet at the Charleston County Main Public Library on Saturday, December 10th located at 68 Calhoun Street. The telephone number is 843-805-6801. There is an enclosed parking garage adjacent to the library which will allow access to the library by taking an elevator and using the parking level entrance. A parking voucher will be issued when entering the garage which the clerk at the library's front desk will validate for free parking.

Those wishing to join up for lunch should park in the garage and then gather in the lobby at the front desk beginning at 11:30 a.m. to walk as a group to a nearby restaurant. There are several very good sit-down eateries within two or three blocks of the library. After lunch, we will return to the library as close to 12:30 p.m. as possible for the meeting, which should take us to approximately 4:30 p.m.

Our guest speaker after lunch will be Ms. Christine Wilkinson the interim executive director of the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA). She assumed this responsibility in July of this year upon the retirement of the former executive director, Mr. Howard Chapman. Christine has been with CARTA for many years holding various positions at the agency during her time there. CARTA provides fixed route service in the greater Charleston metropolitan area, demand response paratransit service (Tel-a-Ride), and rubber-tired trolley service in the peninsular area (the Downtown Area Shuttle, known as DASH).

Christine will bring us an update on the plans for a proposed multi-modal transportation center in North Charleston near the airport and convention center. The new center will combine facilities for Amtrak, CARTA, Greyhound and Southeastern Stages bus lines, local taxi service, meeting rooms and retail sales.
