Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains

CAPT Board Meeting
March 16, 2019
Charleston, SC

The Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains will meet at the Otranto Road Regional Library at 2261 Otranto Road in North Charleston, SC, at 1:00 PM, on Saturday, March 16th. The telephone number for the library is (843) 572-4094. To reach the library via Interstate 26 coming from points west and north, proceed East toward Charleston and take Exit 205B (Exit 205A if you are coming from the east or southeast and/or the City of Charleston). You will now be on University Boulevard. This boulevard goes toward Goose Creek, SC, and will take you past Charleston Southern University which will be on your left. Proceed down University Boulevard for about five miles and bear right onto US Highway 78 (also known as Rivers Avenue). After turning onto Rivers Avenue, Otranto Road will be a right turn at the first traffic light that you will come to. On the right there will be a Murphy Express gas/convenience store at the corner of Rivers Avenue and Otranto Road. Go for about a block and a half on Otranto Road and the library will be on the left.

There are not a lot of quality, sit-down-type dining places in this area. Instead there are many, many fast-food type eateries. For anyone wishing to gather for lunch around 11:30 AM, the best recommendation is East Bay Deli which is located at 9135 University Blvd., Charleston. They have a fairly healthy 'food bar' to select from. It is on the right side of the road among some trees so it is a little hard to spot but it is immediately past a Zaxby's also on the right and about 2 miles after you leave I-26.

At the conclusion of the meeting (we have the meeting room until 4 PM), we can visit the new North Charleston Multi-modal Transportation Center, which is located at 4565 Gaynor Avenue, N. Charleston. The center had a "soft opening" in December of last year for Amtrak service but a grand opening/ribbon-cutting will be held later in the Spring of 2019. To reach the center, go back out to Rivers Avenue, turn right and proceed toward downtown North Charleston for about six or seven miles and watch for the green sign for the 'Amtrak Station' (at last check, still using the old signage); you will then make a right turn off Rivers Avenue. Circle around under Rivers Avenue and you will come out near the parking area for the new center.
